How we picked

We did not test these chargers in our own garage. What we did do was apply a published set of criteria to every charger sold in Canada that could plausibly belong on this list, then cross-checked the survivors against reviews from Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, and InsideEVs (see Sources at the bottom of this page). Every spec and every “why we picked it” bullet comes directly from the manufacturer.

Our criteria:

Sold by a Canadian retailer with Canadian stock and shipping.
Cold-weather rated to at least −30 °C, which most Ontario installs need.
NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X outdoor enclosure for unheated garages and exterior mounts.
Manufacturer warranty of at least 3 years.
Output of at least 30 A (40 A preferred to future-proof for larger battery EVs).
Cable length of at least 24 feet to reach most panel-to-parking distances.

Why we picked it

Manufacturer-rated to operate at −40 °C, the coldest published minimum of any pick in this list. FLO's spec sheet states a −40 °C to +50 °C range; the two Grizzl-E units publish a −30 °C floor; Tesla and ChargePoint don't publish a minimum operating temperature on their product pages at all.
Type 4X enclosure (the X = corrosion-proof, not just water-resistant) is one step above the standard NEMA 4 the other picks list. Designed for salt-air, coastal Ontario, and roadside-salt-spray installs.

What else to know before you buy

Safety first: this is not electrical advice

Level 2 chargers run on 240 V. The picks above are consumer-product information, not engineering or electrical advice. In Ontario, installation work for hire must be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor and inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority — even when a homeowner does the work themselves where permitted. The inspection fee is set by the ESA and is separate from the installation cost. Do not attempt a hardwired install yourself unless you are qualified and permitted to do so; an unpermitted install can void your homeowner insurance and the manufacturer warranty.

No active home-charger rebates in Ontario right now

As of 2026, there is no provincial or federal rebate a homeowner can claim toward a home charger or its installation, so budget both at full price. Some hydro utilities (Toronto Hydro, Alectra, and others) periodically offer small bill credits for time-of-use charging. It is worth checking with your provider, but do not count on it. Installation often costs more than the charger

Installation cost varies too much to quote up front. It depends on your panel capacity, the cable run from panel to charger, whether you need outdoor trenching, and whether a panel upgrade is required. Get at least two quotes from licensed Ontario electricians before you commit, ideally with the specific charger model you plan to install. Many electricians will quote remotely from a photo of your panel.

Plug-in or hardwire?

Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 on a 50 A circuit) is easier to swap or relocate later, and lets you use a portable charger from the same outlet. Hardwired installs can run at higher amperage on the same wire size and have one fewer component to fail, but moving the charger means an electrician visit.

What it costs to run

40 A or 50 A?

A 40 A charger delivers 9.6 kW; a 48 A charger delivers 11.5 kW. Tesla states 71 km of range added per hour at 11.5 kW for most of its lineup, so a 40 A unit adds roughly 50-60 km per hour to a typical EV. For overnight home charging the difference rarely matters; both fully refill a typical daily commute many times over. Step up to 50 A if you drive very long distances daily or own a large-battery vehicle (Lightning, Cybertruck, Hummer EV).

Connector: J1772 vs NACS

J1772 is the legacy standard used by every non-Tesla EV sold in Canada. NACS is Tesla’s connector, now adopted by Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, and most other automakers for vehicles sold from 2025 onward. Several of our picks ship in either J1772 or NACS versions; choose based on your current car. Adapters exist in both directions, so a J1772 charger with a NACS adapter still works for newer Teslas, and vice versa.
